Megan E O’Keefe wins the Morningstar award!

Glad tidings from Derby! This weekend, at a wonderful ceremony during the EdgeLit literary festival, the Gemmell Award for Fantasy 2016 winners were announced. We’ve got to tell you, we were absolutely delighted!

Firstly, our Megan E O’Keefe, author of Steal the Sky (part of the Scorched Continent series, which also includes Break the Chains and Inherit the Flame) won the Morningstar Award for Best Fantasy Debut! *Throws glitter* Alas, Megan couldn’t make the ceremony, what with living in California AND spending the weekend celebrating her birthday but the wonderful Matt Dovey collected on her behalf (see picture below). Thanks for everything Matt!

Secondly long time Robot, Gav Thorpe won the Legend award for best novel for Warbeast (Black Library). See, we always knew you were a legend, Gav and now you’ve the trophy to prove it! Luckily, as a local, Gav was around to collect the award and wandered off at the end of the night looking a bit shady clasping four foot axe.

Congratulations to both on such wonderful wins!

Now, to get this Morningstar Award in the post. *Searches for bubblewrap*

Explore the Scorched Continent on us – free Steal the Sky Chapters

Special Sunday reading for you (well, those of you who are yet to devour this splendid book) from “epic steampunk Firefly” Steal the Skythe first instalment in Megan E O’Keefe‘s Scorched Continent series.

It’s fresh, bright and brilliant. As the nice Joseph Heller at NPR said: “it’s a buddy tale, a heist caper, a socioeconomic thriller and a steampunk-seasoned fantasia all at once. And it fires beautifully on all cylinders.”

Steal The Sky by Megan O'KeefeDetan Honding, a wanted conman of noble birth and ignoble tongue, has found himself in the oasis city of Aransa. He and his trusted companion Tibs may have pulled off one too many cons against the city’s elite and need to make a quick escape. They set their sights on their biggest heist yet – the gorgeous airship of the exiled commodore Thratia.

But in the middle of his scheme, a face changer known as a doppel starts murdering key members of Aransa’s government. The sudden paranoia makes Detan’s plans of stealing Thratia’s ship that much harder. And with this sudden power vacuum, Thratia can solidify her power and wreak havoc against the Empire. But the doppel isn’t working for Thratia and has her own intentions. Did Detan accidentally walk into a revolution and a crusade? He has to be careful – there’s a reason most people think he’s dead. And if his dangerous secret gets revealed, he has a lot more to worry about than a stolen airship.

Break the Chains, the second in the Scorched Continent series was released just this month, so if you’re intrigued by Steal the Sky and want more, more, more, you don’t have to wait.

Steal the Sky is available in all good bookstores and wherever books are sold.

Introducing Megan E. O’Keefe, Angry Robot’s Latest Author!

We are very excited to announce our latest author, Megan E. O’Keefe, signed from Sam Morgan at JABberwocky and her trilogy, The Scorched Continent. The first in this series, Steal the Sky, will be released in January 2016 and in her breathless debut novel, Megan gives us The Lies of Locke Lamora on giant sand dunes with exploding airships!

Our Phil Jourdan led the charge for Megan’s book and here’s just a snippet of why he loved it: “I cannot be the only one to have a fondness for smart-alecky protagonists, airships, explosions, shape-shifting entities and exotic forms of capital punishment… right? The other thing worth saying about Megan’s novel is that it’s just damned good.”

Angry Robot Author Megan O'KeefeMegan E. O’Keefe: “I’m delighted to be joining the Angry Robot army. Not only do they produce gorgeous, genre-expanding books, but I’m pretty sure this means I’ll be on the right side when the robot uprising comes. One step closer to world domination!”

Megan lives in the Bay Area of California and makes soap for a living. (It’s only a little like Fight Club.) She has worked in arts management and graphic design, and spends her free time tinkering with anything she can get her hands on. She is a first place winner in the Writers of the Future competition, vol. 30. Steal the Sky is her first novel. Join us in welcoming Megan to the Robot Family on her Twitter page and check out her website: www.meganokeefe.com.

Steal the Sky:

Detan Honding is a conman on the run who thinks he’s got it made when an opportunity arises to steal a gorgeous new airship. Unluckily, the watch-captain whom he thought was in on the plan with him turns out to be an imposter. She’s a wily shape-shifting creature known as a doppel, and she’s wanted for murder.

With the doppel bringing more attention to his schemes than he’d like, Detan considers fleeing the city. But the doppel makes it clear she’ll harm his only friend if he bails on her – and so he’s forced to act. When his attempt to steal the ship backfires, he ends up in the hands of the empire that’s been chasing him, and must use a special power he’s always been afraid of to escape.
