If Then, What Now? – Bookbub for If Then Today

If Then by Matthew de Abaitua“This is the kind of post-apocalypse, after-it-all-changed novel — with clever codicils — that the Brits do with so much more classy, idiosyncratic style than anyone else.” (Paul Di Filippo)

“If Then may be one of the most important works of British SF to appear in recent years. It is stunningly original and superbly well written.” (Nina Allen)

If, for some strange reason (excuses on a postcard), you haven’t read Matthew De Abaitua’s sumptuous and intriguing post-apocalyptic If Thenthen today is your lucky day!

June 25th in the UK and Canada, Bookbub has your back – so discover The Process for 99p/$1.99.

In the near future, after the collapse of society as we know it, one English town survives under the protection of the computer algorithms of the Process, which governs every aspect of their lives. The Process gives and it takes. It allocates jobs and resources, giving each person exactly what it has calculated they will need. But it also decides who stays under its protection, and who must be banished to the wilderness beyond. Human life has become totally algorithm-driven, and James, the town bailiff, is charged with making sure the Process’s suggestions are implemented.

But now the Process is making soldiers. It is readying for war — the First World War. Mysteriously, the Process is slowly recreating events that took place over a hundred years ago, and is recruiting the town’s men to fight in an artificial reconstruction of the Dardanelles campaign. James, too, must go fight. And he will discover that the Process has become vastly more sophisticated and terrifying than anyone had believed possible.

When Saffron Coulter stumbles through a hole in reality, she finds herself trapped in Kena, a magical realm on the brink of civil war. There, her fate becomes intertwined with that of three very different women: Zech, the fast-thinking acolyte of a cunning, powerful exile; Viya, the spoiled, runaway consort of the empire-building ruler, Vex Leoden; and Gwen, an Earth-born worldwalker whose greatest regret is putting Leoden on the throne.

But Leoden has allies, too, chief among them the Vex’Mara Kadeja, a dangerous ex-priestess who shares his dreams of conquest. Pursued by Leoden and aided by the Shavaktiin, a secretive order of storytellers and mystics, the rebels flee to Veksh, a neighboring matriarchy ruled by the fearsome Council of Queens.

Saffron is out of her world and out of her depth, but the further she travels, the more she finds herself bound to her friends with ties of blood and magic. Can one girl ‘an accidental worldwalker’ really be the key to saving Kena? Or will she just die trying?

StoryBundle: The Steampunk Bundle

All Covers Large

Dearest robot pals, how would you like to get your hands on some of the best steampunk novels around? You would, would you? Well, the chance is upon you with StoryBundle‘s steampunk offer!

Curated by author Cat Rambo, the bundle is a collection of eleven fine novels from some of the genre’s most beloved authors, including our very own Lavie Tidhar. The bundle offer is available now and lasts for the next 22 days.

Here’s what Cat had to say on the deal:

“I have always loved steampunk, even before anyone knew it by that name, back when I first encountered a television show, The Wild Wild West, featuring clockwork assassins and mad scientists, and the two brave agents fighting them as they traveled across the country in their custom railroad car. So when I got a chance to curate a bundle for StoryBundle, my first thought was, of course, to use that as my organizing principle, particularly since it gave me a chance to showcase some of my particular favorites.

This bundle includes both steampunk set in our own world as well as some set in secondary worlds. I used it as an excuse to talk to some of my favorite indie writers, like Lindsay Buroker and Frank Tuttle, who’d produced two series I loved and thought showed steampunk at its most imaginative. I got to pull in some of the writers that I’d published work from while editing Fantasy Magazine, such as Genevieve Valentine and Lavie Tidhar. Every book in the bundle is a solid read, presenting books that I hope you enjoy as much as I did. I’ve tried to include some series as well, so you’ve got something to explore even after you’re done with these books. And I’ve included a few anthologies, samplers of even more writers whose work you can pursue.

Many of these books to me seem to justify the “punk” in steampunk. They’re works that question established norms and turn them on their heads, works that look at issues of industrialization and how they intersect with race, class, and gender in interesting and often entertaining ways, works that take history as their launching point and spin an alternate reality. That’s something I’ve tried to do with my steampunk stories, providing protagonists who are black, Native American, trans, bisexual, on the spectrum, and additional “others” and this bundle lives up to that vision.

And StoryBundle’s a cool form of alternative publishing, letting indie and small press authors join together to present bundles that pack a whole lot of reading into a price that you choose (as long as it’s $5 or above). For that $5 you get the basic bundle of five books in any eBook format. $15 (or more if you want to support the writers even further) gets you the bonus books as well.”

So, by parting with your monies to support indie and small press authors you can get some or all of these titles:

The Alchemy of Stone – Ekaterina Sedia
The Bookman – Lavie Tidhar
City of the Saints – D J Butler
Altered America:Steampunk Stories – Cat Rambo
All The Paths of Shadow – Frank Tuttle
The Emperor’s Edge series: Books 1 – 3 – Lindsay Buroker
Ghost in the Cogs – edited by Scott Gable & C. Dombrowski
Blood Ties – Quincy J Allen
Mechanique – Genevieve Valentine
The SEA is Ours – Jaymee Goh and Joyce Chng
Best of Penny Dread Tales – edited by Kevin J. Anderson and Quincy J. Allen

Pretty good, right? So strap on your cogs and prepare to take flight! The link is right here.

Kindle Daily Deal: Nexus and Crux

Heads up, USA!

Ramez Naam‘s Nexus and Crux are on offer for just$1.99 today, thanks to Amazon’s Kindle Daily Deal.

Make sure you head on over and pick them both up. If you need any reason to justify the (very cheap) purchase, then just take a look at some of the praise for the first two books in the Nexus trilogy, below.

NNexus by Ramez Naam (May 2015 re-issue)exus

In the near future, the experimental nano-drug Nexus can link human together, mind to mind. There are some who want to improve it. There are some who want to eradicate it. And there are others who just want to exploit it.

When a young scientist is caught improving Nexus, he’s thrust over his head into a world of danger and international espionage – for there is far more at stake than anyone realizes.

“Ramez Naam’s debut novel Nexus is a superbly plotted high-tension technothriller about a War-on-Drugs-style crackdown on brain/computer interfaces … full of delicious, thoughtful moral ambiguity”
– Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing

“It’s good. Scary good. Take a chance and stop reading now and have a great time reading a bleeding edge technical thriller that is full of surprises.”
– James Floyd Kelly, Wired.com’s GeekDad blog

“A fast, fun read which is both emotionally engaging and thought-provoking. You’ll be mulling over the implications of Nexus — the book and the drug — long after you put the book down.”
– Annalee Newitz, IO9.com

Crux by Ramez Naam (May 2015 re-issue)Crux

Six months have passed since the release of Nexus 5. The world is a different, more dangerous place.

In the USA, the freedom fighters of the Post-Human Liberation Front use Nexus to turn men and women into human time bombs aimed at the President and his allies.

The first blows in the war between human and posthuman have been struck

Sublime. This book is speculative fiction at its finest. Mr Naam masterfully mobilizes the zeitgeist of contemporary political and tech culture … Tempts readers with equal parts dread and optimism. This is not a book to be missed.”
Page of Reviews

Highly recommended for preparation of the future revolution.”
– Harper Reed, former CTO of Obama for America

Crux is an outstanding speculative fiction adventure … in the same league as Michael Crichton and Daniel Suarez. Put it at the top of your summer reading list!”
– Scientific American

Peacemaker: Kindle Daily Deal

Peacemaker by Marianne de PierresHead on over to Amazon tomorrow, as Marianne de Pierre‘s excellent Peacemaker is the Kindle Daily Deal for Wednesday 12 August, ahead of the publication of the second in the series, Mythmaker, due for release in October.

Virgin Jackson is the senior ranger in Birrimun Park – the world’s last natural landscape, overshadowed though it is by a sprawling coastal megacity. She maintains public safety and order in the park, but her bosses have brought out a hotshot cowboy to help her catch some drug runners who are affecting tourism. She senses the company is holding something back from her, and she’s not keen on working with an outsider like Nate Sixkiller.

When an imaginary animal from her troubled teenage years reappears, Virgin takes it to mean one of two things: a breakdown (hers!) or a warning. When the dead bodies start piling up around her and Nate, she decides on the latter.

Something terrible is about to happen in the park and Virgin and her new partner are standing in its path…

Here’s what the critics had to say about it:

“Move over stale f/sf themes; enter: Peacemaker, a wholly original and thrilling fantasy adventure.”
Looking for a Good Book

Peacemaker rollicks along at a cracking pace, and I found myself holding my breath in anticipation at times, which is always a good sign! I got to the end of the book and flipped the last page in disappointment, because while the story ended well (albeit definitely set up for the next volume), I simply didn’t want it to stop. Bring on the next instalment!
Fablecroft

“This is the first novel by Marianne de Pierres I’ve read, and I hope to read more about Virgin Jackson and (perhaps) Nate Sixkiller. A fun romp that is much more than the parts which comprise it.”
Tor.Com

“I liked a lot about this book. There were plenty of twists, turns, and double crossesPeacemaker is a good SF mystery for people looking for something a little different. Four stars.”
Dangerous Dan

Peacemaker is definitely a cut above the standard for books of this type: intelligent, witty and with a good heart. If you’re looking for a fast read that surprises and engages, then look no further.”
The Newtown Review of Books

The sequel to Peacemaker, Mythmaker will be out on 1 October (UK/R.o.W) / 6 October (US/Can).
